The scholars and bureaucrats of Kemet had to call magic users something, especially in the aftermath of The Stellar Rupture. The official, stuffy term assigned to these individuals by the Authority for Regulating and Controlling Arcanometric Norms and Explications, or A.R.C.A.N.E., on government documents and in every dusty university textbook is Frequence Medium. This is because, scientifically speaking, a magic wielder is just a person whose brain has a uniquely strong connection, a Cognitive Resonance, which allows them the ability to tap into the innate magical energies of this world. They become the medium, the channel, that can perceive these forces and then tap into the right ‘magical frequencies’ to actually cast a spell. However, no one actually says “Frequence Medium” when they’re talking. It’s too long and it just sounds ridiculous outside of acedemic settings. The shorthand that most people of civilized society have adopted is Frequem (pronounced FREH-kwem).
Of course, not everyone is so polite about it. Magic is still a massive wedge in society, and the people who hate it, the ones who still blame magic for everything that went wrong, use a much uglier word. For them, anyone with a spark for magic use is just a Freq. They consider anyone who can tap into those energies is dangerous, different, and shouldn’t be trusted. It’s a simple word that carries a whole lot of anger and fear.
